About Africa Trek

About the Authors:

Alexandre graduated in Political Sciences and mastered in Geopolitics. Between these two cycles, he cycled around the world with his best friend and brought back a best seller: On a roulé sur la Terre (Laffont ‘96).  They travelled 25,000 km through 35 countries in a year. Sonia joined them to cross the Andes between Argentina and Chile. In ‘98, still with the same friend, Alex walked the Himalayas, from Bhutan to Tajikistan, 5000 km in one sweep, sneaking in and out of nine countries with a mad clandestine crossing of Tibet for 500 km. A book and TV documentary came out of this breathtaking and unequaled undertaking: La Marche dans le Ciel (Laffont ’98). Sonia also took part in that trek by circling the Manaslu peak with the mavericks. Between these two big trips, Alexandre was a TV presenter of a mountaineering magazine on national channel France 3. But Africa Trek was the project he was waiting to devote himself to with his newlywed wife Sonia.

Sonia graduated in Social Studies at the Sorbonne, and mastered in Educational Practices of Developing Countries. For six months, she led an orphanage in Kathmandu, where she was in charge of 36 little pariah girls. She backpacked alone in India when Alexandre walked the Himalayas, went on a schooling mission in Vietnam and worked at UNESCO for a while before presenting a show on the French channel Voyage. She joined Alexandre in his two big journeys, got engaged between the two, married after the second, and embarked on the third. Big time. A three-year long honeymoon in Africa. When she signed on, she missed the word: "walking..."

Since their return, they have devoted their time to sharing the human treasures they brought back from Africa, and also to extensive lecturing for the benefit of numerous associations that work in Africa. Reporting about the world in a deeper and slower way is their way of practicing journalism. They raise their two children just outside Paris, surrounded by fields, forests and horses, and are preparing another journey with them.

You can catch up with them on their website, www.africatrek.com.
